چکیده

The effect of diets containing as their protein component wheat gluten or casein, fed ad libitum to adult male rats for 1 to 6 days, after 6 days of protein deprivation, on the liver levels of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G8PD) and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PGD) were studied. In rats fed the gluten diet the values of body weight gain, liver size, liver protein, liver xanthine oxidase, G«PD and 6PGD activities were lower in comparison with rats fed the casein diet. Amino acid supplements to the gluten diet improved the nutritive value of this diet, as shown b> the enhancement of body weight gain, liver size, liver protein and xanthine oxidase activity to levels found in rats fed the casein diet, but failed to increase GePD and 6PGD activities. Essential fatty acids added to the casein diet, in order to bring their level up to that of the gluten diet, proved incapable of decreasing the levels of G«PD and 6PGD activities found in rats fed the casein diet..It was concluded that the differ ential effect of gluten and casein on liver GoPD and 6PGD is independent of differences in the nutritive value and in the essential fatty acid content of these proteins, and is dependent upon one or more factors different from those known to affect the liver HMP shunt dehydrogenases. On the repression of rat liver HMP shunt dehydrogenases by wheat gluten.

The liver levels of HMP shunt dehydrogenases were determined in adult male rats fed for 6 days, after a 6-day protein deprivation, diets containing as their nitrogenous components wheat gluten, or casein or amino acid mixtures simulating the amino acid pattern of these proteins. The gluten diet, in comparison to the casein diet, caused lower activities of HMP shunt dehydrogenases. Amino acid di...

The effect of amino-acid-supplemented wheat gluten on cholesterol metabolism in the rat.

The effect of lysine- and threonine-supplemented wheat gluten on cholesterol metabolism was studied using male weanling rats. Animals were fed on cholesterol-free diets containing 100 or 200 g gluten/kg with or without amino acid supplementation, and compared with animals given 50, 100 and 200 g casein/kg diets, for 3 weeks. A hypocholesterolaemic effect observed with the wheat gluten-fed rats,...

Effect of dietary proteins on insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) messenger ribonucleic acid content in rat liver.

Effects of quantity and quality of dietary proteins on plasma immunoreactive insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) concentration, and content of IGF-1 mRNA in rat liver were investigated in rats. Plasma immunoreactive IGF-1 concentration in rats given a casein diet was higher than that in rats given a soya-bean-protein or protein-free diet. The IGF-1 mRNA content in liver was estimated by the No...

The effect of varying the quality of dietary protein and energy on food intake and growth in the Zucker rat.

1. Food intake and rates of protein, lipid and energy deposition were measured for lean and obese (fatty) Zucker rats offered to appetite from 34 d of age to slaughter at 66 d of age, one of sixteen semi-synthetic diets. Measurements were also made of the digestibility of dietary protein and the metabolizability of dietary energy. Total carcasses were analysed for protein and lipid, and body en...

Supplementary effect of spirulina on hematological status of rats during pregnancy and lactation.

The effect of Spirulina on iron status was assessed based on hemoglobin, packed cell volume, serum iron, total iron binding capacity and ferritin levels of rats during pregnancy and lactation. Rats were fed 5 different kinds of diets (casein, Spirulina, wheat gluten, Spirulina + wheat gluten, Spirulina without additional vitamins and minerals) each providing 22 percent protein. Diets containing...
